Lunch and Learn - Sellafield Decommissioning Opportunities

Subsea UK has issued a call to action, urging supply chain companies to step forward with ideas and solutions that could support the decommissioning of the largest nuclear site in Europe.

The industry body has teamed up with Sellafield Ltd to run a ‘Game Changers’ workshop, inviting businesses across the UK to submit their ideas and technologies which could help increase productivity and reduce the costs and risks associated with the decommissioning of the 700 acre site in west Cumbria.

Sellafield is the most complex industrial site requiring remediation in Western Europe, comprising approximately 700 acres in west Cumbria. 

The decommissioning of the Sellafield site is anticipated to take over 100 years and cost more than £120bn, with operations facing complex challenges never encountered before and requiring investment in innovative technologies, concepts and methods.

Sellafield Ltd, are inviting proposals for ‘Game Changers’ – new ideas and technologies which can reduce costs, reduce risk and make operations safer whilst accelerating the safe delivery of decommissioning.

Due to the diverse operations performed at the Sellafield site, a wide range of challenges will need to be addressed. Through the Sellafield sponsored Game Changers Innovation Programme, businesses can assess funding and support to enable them to develop solutions to some of these challenges.

Decommissioning also presents opportunities for businesses operating outside of the nuclear sector, with genuine scope for technologies and techniques used in the subsea and oil and gas sectors to be translated across.

Presenting at the lunch will be Luke O’Brien, Technical Authority (Effluent and Environmental Chemistry) at the National Nuclear Laboratory, who will provide an overview of the clean out activities required when a nuclear plant reaches the end of its operational life.

The challenges linked to measurement and analysis of both chemical and radiochemical species at the Sellafield site will be highlighted by Mike Edmondson, Technical Leader at the National Nuclear Laboratory.

Alex Allen, Technical Lead for Sellafield Ltd, will also be outlining the challenges associated with condition monitoring and inspection of stored waste packages.

There will be an opportunity for an open discussion with the Sellafield and NNL staff and Paul Knight from the Game Changers programme will outline the route to accessing funding and support from this innovation initiative.

Alex Allen - Technical Lead, Sellafield Ltd
Alex is Technical Lead for Sellafield Ltd, supporting legacy waste conditioning and storage programmes.
His previous work for Sellafield over the last 17 years includes:
•    Developing and delivering technology solutions for a major new plant;
•    Technical Manager for spent fuel drying;
•    Producing the Sellafield integrated waste strategy and effluent strategies;
•    Feasibility assessment of new ventilation stack;
•    Process design for waste treatment plants;
•    Waste management of the Capenhurst site.

Before working at Sellafield, Alex spent several years in the aerospace industry in the UK and US on technology development for Serck Aviation.

Alex has an MEng in Chemical and Process Engineering and is a Chartered Engineer, Fellow of the IChemE, and Chair of the NW IChemE Member Group.


Luke O'Brien - Laboratory Fellow, National Nuclear Laboratory (NNL)
Luke O’Brien is a research manager with over 15 years of applied experience in developing research programmes and teams to support nuclear effluent treatment and environmental chemistry. 

He is a Laboratory Fellow at NNL and holds a visiting position at the University of Manchester where he supports the development of fundamental research. 

Luke has a track record in the nuclearisation of technology to support decommissioning and developing innovative technology solutions. He is a Fellow of the RSC and has led a centre of expertise for effluent treatment on behalf of Sellafield Ltd.

Michael Edmondson - Technical Leader, National Nuclear Laboratory (NNL)
Michael Edmondson is a Technical Leader at the National Nuclear Laboratory (NNL). He is currently embedded in Sellafield Limited leading Integrated Research Teams themed around People and Analytical Techniques. He is involved in R&D strategy and has a keen interest in decommissioning and characterisation techniques with a mission to improve safety, reduce costs and timescales of decommissioning through the introduction of innovations. He has previously contributed as study lead for a £500M movement of the analytical services at Sellafield into new facilities.

Michael is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry and co-ordinates the NNL RSC Accredited Scheme. He is an innovation leader, contributor to the Corporate Social Responsibility programme and actively involved in the NNL recruitment process. In 2016, he won the NNL Good Citizen Impact Award.
