Dutch contracting company, Van Oord Dredging and Marine Contractors B.V. [Van Oord], have purchased a suite of Gemini 720is multibeam imaging sonars, in the week of its launch at Oceanology 2016, 15 - 17 March, ExCel, London.

The Gemini 720is sonars, combined with customised Gemini SeaTec software, will enable Van Oord to automate basic tasks such as monitoring the touchdown point of pipelaying operations on Stingray, the shallow-water pipelay barge; thus eradicating the need to deploy a highly-skilled operator and reducing the overall project time and costs. The system will also be used for obstacle avoidance on rock dump vessels. Van Oord’s initial trials of the Gemini system during survey inspections verified its scope, prompting them to purchase.

With real-time visualisation and a fast update rate of 30 Hz across a 120 degree field-of-view, the new Gemini 720is regenerates in a new body shape with the latest electronics and features an integrated velocity of sound sensor and near-range focus. Communication protocols are Ethernet communications as standard (VDSL and dual communication units are also available) and the standalone Gemini software offers basic target tracking capabilities, including SeeByte advanced target tracking.

Vanessa Venida, Chief Surveyor, commented: "We tested the Gemini 720id to discover that the 20 degree vertical beam provided us with the best overall performance for the dredging, marine engineering and energy projects we undertake. At Van Oord we have seen the true benefit in moving to multibeam technology for imaging sonars and due to the improved performance and the enhanced software capabilities of the new model, we are adopting the Gemini 720is as our standard for our offshore operations.”

Scott McLay, Tritech Sales Director, commented: "With the launch of the next generation of multibeam imaging sonar, the delivery of 6 Gemini 720is sonars to Van Oord along with Gemini SeaTec software specifically adapted to their requirements, highlights the market confidence in our multibeam technology and emphasises our ability to innovate existing provisions to improve customer operations.”

Van Oord is a leading international contractor, specialising in dredging, marine engineering and offshore projects (oil, gas and wind) which aims to join forces with its clients to create innovative, sustainable solutions and safe working conditions.
