With more than 70% of current world oil production coming from brownfields/ mature fields, the challenge to extend the life of these fields in a cost-effective way is becoming increasingly difficult.

The Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Aberdeen Section is set to host a presentation in Aberdeen this week, which will see international well flow management specialist, Expro, discuss the ways in which this challenge can be addressed. Taking place on Wednesday 27 January, John McKay, sales manager, Meters (Europe) at Expro will discuss the need for production optimisation and workover strategies to overcome the environmental, safety and cost related implications of brownfield management.

Drawing upon more than 20 years’ industry experience gained in positions including well testing engineer, project engineer and Eastern hemisphere reservoir monitoring manager, Mr McKay will describe the use of sonar clamp-on flow meters as a cost-effective, environmentally-friendly approach to support production optimisation of brownfields.

Commenting ahead of his presentation, Mr McKay said: "Sonar meters are non-intrusively installed to collect real time well data at actual conditions. The recent case studies covered in this presentation will show how the data collected by the sonar meters lead to proactive decision making and implementation of production optimisation campaigns. The vast array of benefits advantages offered by the technology will also be explained.”

Ian Phillips, SPE Aberdeen chairman, said: "The current situation in the North Sea has resulted in a significant focus on innovation and cost effective technologies to maximise production and extend the lifetime of assets. Mr McKay’s presentation is particularly relevant in the current climate and his presentation will be of great interest to those working in well flow management.”

The SPE Aberdeen technical meeting will take place on Wednesday, 27 January, from 6.30-8.30pm at the Aberdeen Douglas Hotel. This presentation is part of a monthly programme of technical presentations organised by SPE Aberdeen and sponsored by Expro and Shell. For further information and booking, please visit
