Aberdeen-based Subsea Technologies Limited (STL) has won high-level recognition in this year's prestigious Institution of Mechanical Engineers Manufacturing Excellence Awards (MX).

The subsea well intervention and control specialist was one of only two companies honoured in the Lombard Award for Best SME 2014 category, taking the "highly commended" accolade.

Along with the category winner, Darlington-based Mech-Tech, and two other finalists, STL took part in a complex and lengthy award submission process which involved a site visit from Institution assessors.

Managing director Drummond Lawson also attended a judging panel in the summer, ahead of the awards ceremony at the University of Warwick on 30 September at which he, Chairman Mark Vorenkamp and Technical Director Dave McKay, were presented with a certificate.

The review process was separated into eight individual business operation category award areas financial management, logistics and operational efficiency, partnership with education, people effectiveness, sustainable manufacturing, innovation in products and processes, customer focus, and business development and change management.

Mr Lawson said: "STL went for the overall award, meaning the company was judged on all eight individual award categories in parallel, and we are delighted to have achieved such a fantastic result.

"This award is our most prestigious to date because unlike our other awards it involved a detailed evaluation of how we operate by a panel of professional engineers and business process experts over a number of months."

The Institution judges commended STL as a "highly innovative company that had developed some really exciting products for tailored well control, well intervention, and subsea control system applications".

Mr Lawson added: "Being a UK based subsea engineering business, is it an outstanding honour for us to be evaluated by our peers and as a result to be recognised for our products and processes by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.

"This could not have possible without the hard work, enthusiasm and commitment of the entire STL team.

Of the 21 finalists across all categories, STL was the only contender based in Scotland and one of only two operating in the global oil and gas sector.
