Dr O’Brien is a chartered engineer with close to 30 years’ industry experience. His technical areas of expertise include riser mechanics, riser design and flexible pipe technology. He is executive director at riser specialist company MCS Kenny, now a business within Wood Group Kenny. Dr O’Brien plays an active role in a number of industry bodies, including Subsea UK, and regularly presents technical papers at industry conferences around the world. He is an honorary professor of engineering at the University of Aberdeen.
